Fixer is the Shapen Sister responsible for leading maintenance and repairs for everything in The Orchard. She is stubbornly driven by her inquisitive nature, and wants to know what makes the world around her "tick" – questioning everything from how the trains work, to the ALLMOTHER's authority.

Fixer and Watcher were very close, sharing many intimate moments together, until Fixer is called for and departs to The Other Side.

⚠️ CAUTION! major spoilers ahead! ⚠️

Personality[edit | edit source]

Fixer is mischievous and curious. She uses her access as a Fixer to explore areas that most other Shells never see, and even tries to study things without explanation, like how the trains run. Her curiosity drives her to question things that others might consider forbidden and taboo, but she is fearless in her pursuit of knowledge. She also has a rebellious streak, taking things she isn't supposed to take, or bringing Watcher places she isn't supposed to go.

Compared to the other sisters, Fixer is very informal in her speech and mannerisms, even referring to the ALLMOTHER as "mom." She has a talent for making music and songwriting. She isn't good at expressing her feelings, or in saying goodbyes.

When pushed to the brink, Fixer is determined and stubborn. She sticks to her principals and wants to do things the "correct" way. If she's been hurt by someone - as she was hurt by Watcher - she holds onto those feelings and doesn't let go.

History[edit | edit source]

Fixer was the most recent Shell to be graduated before Watcher. Her function is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the equipment and infrastructure within The Orchard, a duty that is becoming increasingly difficult over time. On the day of Watcher's graduation, she leaned in close and whispered to her "I can already tell you and I are going to be trouble", and the two Shapen Sisters grew very close.

Fixer's sense of curiosity and rebellious nature meant she often went beyond her duties of simple maintenance and repair, even taking apart tools for fun. She had the unique privilege of leaving The Orchard in order to perform maintenance, and she and Watcher frequently explored the train tracks together despite the risks. On one occasion, she led Watcher to join her above the inside sky and the two wished on stars together.

(TK: Fixer's song)

Eventually, Fixer is called to join the ALLMOTHER on the Other Side, something she shares with most of her shapen sisters, but not Watcher. Although she tried to avoid an emotional goodbye, Watcher meets her in the station beneath the Orchard right as the train arrives. Fixer does her best to downplay the moment, reminiscising about the time they'd explored the tracks together and wondering aloud about the mechanisms of the train. She jokes to Watcher, saying she would text her, but Watcher reminds her that any contact is forbidden. As the train is about to leave, Fixer finally boards, and playfully tells Watcher to clean up under her bed before the doors close.

The Other Side[edit | edit source]

Some time later, Watcher undergoes her first communion. During this, she experiences several glitches and is suddenly transported into a repressed memory. Secretary tells Watcher that an intruder has gained administrative privileges. After Watcher witnesses how Iris betrayed her friend Jiao on the night of the dance, and Jiao succumbs to the Occupant's disease, Fixer appears to Watcher, and says that they should be deep enough to avoid surveillance. Fixer describes the ALLMOTHER as "kind of bad news", and questions Watcher on how well they know her. Fixer warns Watcher about the ALLMOTHER's true nature, saying that she hits the sisters, denies them immunity, and is colluding with Occupants. Fixer tells Watcher that she has to warn the other shapen sisters, and despite Watcher chastising her for her betrayal, expresses her trust in her before returning Watcher to her intended path.

Watcher quickly informs Principal of the Fixer's betrayal, and following the communion, and not long after, Principal makes an announcement to the Orchard revealing that Fixer's betrayal had been reported to the ALLMOTHER, and Fixer was incinerated as punishment.

Eventually, this is revealed to have been false, and part of Principal's revenge plan to turn Watcher against the ALLMOTHER. It is not known what Fixer was in fact up to in between the months from when she crossed over to the Other Side, and the Occupant attack.

What is known is that during this time, Fixer learned how to control the trains and therefore was able to return to the Orchard and communicate with sisters there, most notably Bartender and Knower who was able to communicate that she was hiding Healer and Bang Bang Fire in Old Town. Roughly two months after the ALLMOTHER's assassination, Fixer infiltrated Old Town and rescued her two sisters.

They spent several years on the train, during which time Fixer explored other parts of their world, learning about the technology. She worked on a scheme to rescue Watcher, coming up with a method and opportunity to break her out without resorting to violence. Although she was successful, due to the delays Watcher had lost her eyes, gouged out by the High Minister in a ploy to appease Principal and delay Watcher's execution.

Suffering from injuries and the effects of the medication she'd been subjected to for years, Fixer offered to donate an eye to Watcher, however Watcher refused. Watcher spent most of her time in communions, reliving her memories and remaining in a near-comatose state. Fixer grew resentful of Watcher, upset by her refusal to talk, and burdened by the responsibility of keeping the train running. She posted herself on the opposite end of the train to Watcher, and eventually refused to even be in the same room as her sister.

Through their exploration of the Other Side, Fixer disovered the bridge of the Pacific 50 and confirmed her suspicions about the true nature of their world - The Orchard, the other side, and everything they'd known had been confined to a single vessel, the Pacific 50: a gigantic submarine deep in the Pacific ocean. Furthermore, the ship iteslf was deteriorating from a milennia of neglect.

Fixer led two projects at this time, one to overthrow Principal through colluding with the Ministers, and another to realise the clone society's original goal of returning to the surface - A mission that Fixer now realised was crucial to their survival.

Seven years later[edit | edit source]

By 7AA, Fixer had managed to convince most of the Ministers to oppose Principal when the time came. However, unbeknownst to her, conditions for the Miscellaneous had reached a boiling point. During the play commemorating the ALLMOTHER's passing, a bomb was set off, killing most of the Ministers and many other sisters who were in the audience. Fixer sent the train back to the Orchard and rescued the named Blue who had carried out the attack.

Fixer interrogates Blue, and finds out from her that Kris, Doreen, and the Jiaos had gone around her to plan the attack. Realising that things were progressing faster than she had planned for, Fixer receives a message to the various factions telling them to meet at the bridge of the Pacific 50 in 72 hours. Not long after, the train breaks down again, stopping them dead on the tracks.

She gets to work trying to make repairs, understanding that the Provisional Government's forces will be hot pursuit, and angry rebuffs Healer's attempts (through Blue) to get her to talk to Watcher, and dismissing Healer's warning that this might be her last chance.

Fixer tries in vain to fix the train, before finally realising that it was beyond her capabilities. She breaks the news to her other sisters, coinciding with the realisation that Watcher has passed on due to the strain of her repeated communions. Fixer coldly shoots down Bang Bang Fire's wishes to carry Watcher's body with them, but in a final moment of tenderness, promises Watcher that she would never let the Principal's forces touch her again, and sets fire to the train to cremate her.

Outside the train, she is seen on her hands and knees, seemingly mourning the loss of her closest sister. The shapen sisters have no choice but to continuing moving, and make the rest of the journey to the command deck by foot.

Here, Fixer gets to work trying to gain control of the ship's systems, and sends Blue and Secretary off on a mission to locate the corpse of the 50 with admin privileges, so that they can use their eyes to pass the retinal scan and take over the ship. Blue is successful, and Fixer is giddy at finally getting access to the ship. She does not have much time to learn how to use it, however, as the various resistance factions have arrived at the station. Fixer sends Blue and Bang Bang Fire downstairs to stall the resistance groups while she becomes familiar with the controls.

Finally, at the meeting, Fixer reveals the truth about the clone society's world, and argues to the other sisters that it is necessary for them to return to the surface. She listens to Watcher's plan, through Blue, for the mass communion and gaining control of an Occupant to overthrow Principal and the provisional government. Learning that two of the Familiars are already gathered in the admin room of the Orchard, Fixer realises that the easiest way to get close enough wouldn't be via the Orchard itself, but instead by descending from the top of the inside sky. She sends the clones back, and communicates their plan to the High Minister to ensure that the Red Guard's attention is focused away from the Orchard.

Initiating The Mass Communion[edit | edit source]

Despite the best attempts of the Jiaos and the Miscellaneous to create a distraction, Capital Red notices how the High Minister has split up their forces, and goes with one other Red Guard to investigate the blind spot.

Fixer, still trying to make a gap in the inside sky for Blue to rappel down, realises they have been caught. When Bang Bang Fire is shot down, she improvises and denotates all her explosives, shattering the ceiling and sending her, Healer, and Blue all tumbling down in freefall towards their original home.

Luckily, Blue is successful in initiating the Mass Communion, transmitting the memories of Iris, Principal, Watcher, and Blue to all the sisters, and is saved by an Occupant who catches her out of the sky.

Epilogue[edit | edit source]

Fixer is ultimately successful in her goals, and she leads the clone society in their return to the surface, not only guaranteeing their survival, but allowing a way forward. They are able to advance their technology and restart human civilisation with more than just clones of Iris and Jiao.

Fixer was able to rediscover powered flight, and in her later years, flew away and left behind the society she raised.
