Johnson The 50 was a straightforward and stern commander in The 50. Johnson and his right-hand officer, Mimi, were the ones who scouted out Iris for her immunity and brought her to the 50's testing facility, the Guarden.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Johnson has a taste for piano, and tends to wax poetically when comfortable. He is more personable than most other members of The 50 and does his best to be charismatic and courteous with others. In high stress scenarios, however, Johnson's attitude tends to break down into a state of dejection or cruelty. He has trouble pinning the blame of his actions on himself and will typically blame circumstance or others.

History[edit | edit source]

The Notes as They Are Written[edit | edit source]

Little is known about Johnson's past, both personally and with The 50. Johnson's first notable act was playing a piece by Johann Sebastian Bach for the Occupants on the piano. The Occupants responded with a similar "discordance" by replicating the song on a genetic note, creating the Disease.

Coercing Iris[edit | edit source]

Following the night of the dance in 2047, Johnson and Mimi arrive at the Kwan's apartment and request that Iris come with them to the Pacific 50, hoping they can use her DNA to create a cure. He is initially as polite and hospitable as he feasibly can be toward Iris, but her degradation and treatment by The 50 quickly wears his spirit down as well.

Excursion[edit | edit source]

At some point, Johnson takes Iris to the surface to see the Occupants. He tried to be transparent with her as a way to convince her to cooperate, but it ultimately fails. Much later, Iris convinces Johnson to take her to her old school under the false promise of "socialized immunity." Upon learning she only came to leave a memorial for Jiao, he informs her that she will not be allowed to leave the ship for the foreseeable future.

Drop Dead[edit | edit source]

After Mimi's murder at the hands of Iris, Johnson's control over The 50 began to dwindle, eventually resulting in a mutiny led by George The 50. During the mutiny, two members of The 50 massacred a dozen of their peers. The intense emotions held by the remaining members led an Occupant to their location, resulting in the deaths of the mutineers. The Occupant makes its way to Pod 3, surprising the remaining members of the 50. Iris makes her way through the commotion, ignoring Johnson as she goes to commune with the Occupant. After Iris accepts the Occupant's gift, The 50 are all infected. Johnson's final moments are spent in abject horror as he succumbs to the Disease in front of Iris.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

Mimi The 50[edit | edit source]

Johnson and Mimi are coworkers and in leadership roles in the Pacific 50, with Johnson having higher rank over Mimi. While Mimi is the head researcher into Iris' immunity, Johnson prevents her from performing more extreme procedures (such as forced insemination) during her research on Iris, stating "We've put her through enough." This restraint does not extend to the other Iris clones the 50 manage to create, as Mimi reports that one clone reached the third trimester of their pregnancy (implying that he did not stop her from allowing the clone to be inseminated).

Iris[edit | edit source]

JOHNSON THE 50: "Humanity needs you to endure" (ch. 4)

Johnson sees Iris as humanity's last hope, and tries to persuade her to cooperate with the 50 in their research. Johnson at first appears to consider Iris' autonomy and personal decisions, wondering if Iris will come with him and Mimi when they come to the Kwan's apartment. Mimi reminds him that they had the ability to force Iris to comply even if she refuses.

As time passes, Johnson grows frustrated with Iris' attitude and lack of cooperation. He uses his absolute authority over her to approve traumatic medical experiments, with little concern over Iris' pain or protest. Iris resents him for this.
