Secretary

Secretary is Watcher's floating octahedron-shaped assistant, who helps her conduct communions.
They also help answer any questions Watcher has about humanity's past, albeit in a detached, conjectural way. These answers are based on available historical records which often lack context, though Secretary tries their best to analyze and speculate the missing pieces anyway.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Secretary seems very young – he speaks with a childlike voice, and comes across as innocent and naive. However, he possesses a wealth of knowledge about ancient humans, and is able to inform Watcher about various ancient human customs.
CAUTION! major spoilers ahead!
Secretary is attentive and kind, offering encouragement to Watcher and checking in on her when she seems down. For example, when Watcher was told Fixer was incinerated, Secretary asks if she needs to lie down. While Secretary is usually reserved and serious, they become timid when confronted with unexpected situations. Sometimes, they show moments of playfulness, such as doing a "neigh" when Watcher communes with Knower near the horse statue.
After the AA time-skip, Secretary's voice has noticeably deepened – akin to a child's voice deepening as they reach puberty. They are also more sarcastic, cynical, and jaded, as a result of their experiences of the past 7 years and being forced to facilitate Watcher reliving her communions 837 times.
They assist the old sisters with their rebellion, and they have even developed a rebellious streak of their own when confronting their Source for the first time.
History[edit | edit source]
just a babby[edit | edit source]
Secretary was one of three Familiars gifted to Iris by her Keeper as a part of their deal to kill the crew onboard the Pacific 50, allowing for Iris to communicate with the Occupants and transit her memories to them. Iris kept the three Familiars close, but it is not known if the name Secretary was given to the blue familiar by Iris, or some time after. Iris repurposed the familiars to commune with the Ancient Sisters, sharing her memories of Hong Kong with them. It appears that she continued to commune with the sisters afterwards, especially with her youngest who she explained details of her past life with.
At some point, Iris left the Orchard, leaving the Youngest Sister in exile, who created the Clone Society. Secretary, and the red familiar are confirmed to have stayed in the Orchard. Secretary was reprogrammed by Iris, which wiped his memories of his origins and given new instructions to follow.
Secretary was presumably passed down to Watchers, being an essential tool by which they could commune and access the ALLMOTHER's memories. Secretary would guide watchers through the communions, and provide additional context about the old world which were alien to the clones. Given the gaps in knowledge, it seems he is drawing from Principal's understanding of the old world, and the memories experienced by Watcher are drawn from her memories.
watcher you're embarrassing[edit | edit source]
During Watcher's first communion, Secretary guides Watcher around Iris's high school, travelling between two periods: One, the night of the dance in 2047CE, and a second visit many years after, with Iris escorted by Johnson The 50.

knife life[edit | edit source]
Watcher damages Secretary and he enters a dormant state. A shard of his body is used by Watcher as the murder weapon to kill ALLMO. He still appears to be inactive in 3AA, when he is presented as evidence by Knower while Watcher is in captivity. During the rescue mission, Bang Bang Fire collects Secretary as well as Watcher, and so he boards the train.
Secretary is reawakened or brought back to life. As a result of the injury, he entered a self-protective state which undid Iris's programming and restored his repressed memories. With him, Watcher begins to commune and relive her memories. He tries again and again to stop her, knowing the damage they will do to her body and mind, but Watcher forces him to commune regardless.
He was sent by Fixer to meet with the Jiao-type clones now working on the Other Side, and attempted to commune with them, but was unable to. He explains this is because "the distance was too great" compared to Iris clones. Instead, Secretary told stories to the Jiao-types, revealing to them the truth about the 'Ancient Jiao's relationship to Iris as well as her mistreatment.
In 7AA, he is able to infiltrate the Orchard following Blue's bombing of the play, and guides the Miscallenous down into the tunnels and to the station where Fixer's train is waiting. After this, he communes with Blue at Watcher's request, and they experience each other's lives in turn, resulting in an 'entanglement' between their memories and identities. Once Blue wakes up, he follows Blue around at Watcher's command, despite this annoying the latest passenger on the train of fugitives.
Secretary and Watcher have come up with a plan to gather the three Familiars and initiate a mass communion, revealing the full truth of Iris's life, their origins, and the deception by Principal to all of the Iris-type and Jiao clones. They plan on summoning an Occupant, which Secretary can merge with and take control of. As Watcher explains the plan to Blue, Secretary confirms to Watcher that she is dying, and draws her attention to her scattered mind.
He travels with the surviving sisters to the bridge of the Pacific 50, and accesses the CCTV footage. He presents this to Blue via time indexes in the style of a communion, and together they track down the body belonging to the crewmember with administrative privileges. Once the plan is agreed, he joins the sisters to the top of the inside sky above the Orchard.
Red to Blue[edit | edit source]
After Fixer blows up the screen, Secretary flies towards Principal's office where the other two Familiars are gathered and intiates the mass communion. He tells Blue that an Occupant is coming, and urges her to hurry and meet him at the top of the mindscape, as she is falling and has limited time before she hits the ground.
Secretary successfully summons Source and merges with them. Source explains their history to Secretary, and Secretary responds with phrases remembered from Iris's first contact with the Occupant - Much to Source's displeasure. Finally, Source accepts Secretary and prepares to integrate the Familiar's memories.
Much to their surprise, Secretary has learned deception, and Secretary overwrites Source with his own data and the moment of Iris's death, over and over again. Secretary erases the memories of Iris kept within Source, and erases his progenitor, telling them:
SECRETARY: Iris must be allowed to die. Or nothing will change.
SECRETARY: We can't hold on to everything... Sometimes, you just don't fit in the backpack.(ch.X)
Having successfully merged with the Occupant and gained control, Secretary asks Blue to make a choice as to "what to carry" into the future, and deciding on the fate of the various factions within the Orchard. He has also resolved that the Occupants must leave Earth for good, and allow what remains of humanity to chart its own course. He allows for the Blue's choice and executes her wishes, whatever they are, and then leaves Earth for good.
Relationships[edit | edit source]
Watcher[edit | edit source]
SECRETARY: Uh...congratulations, Watcher.
WATCHER: What do you want?
SECRETARY: What? No, just...good job.
WATCHER (annoyed): Okay.
SECRETARY: ...
Secretary is friendly towards Watcher and tries to be attentive and helpful. However, Watcher seems to think of them as a nuisance, only occasionally acknowledging them with kindness in return. (Similar to Iris's treatment of Jiao.)
When it is revealed that they are an Occupant, Watcher smashes Secretary to pieces despite them begging her not to.
Blue[edit | edit source]
BLUE: Are you really going to follow me around like this?
SECRETARY: You don't like it?
BLUE: ...did I say that out loud?
SECRETARY: I'ver got some new tricks, I promise!
SECRETARY: And...Watcher told me to, so I have to.
Secretary saves Blue from the Red Guard in the aftermath of the bombing, and also revives her from the communion once she's been in it for too long. Secretary monitors her closely by order of Watcher and the old sisters, and they end up working together during the final chapter. Secretary trusts Blue to make the right choice and cut the right threads that will change the face of society forever, leading to one of the many endings.
Source[edit | edit source]
SOURCE: I see you've been meddled with...
SOURCE: I promise to be gentle.
SECRETARY: Ahhah. Am I...dying?
SOURCE: That concept again. You've spent so long with them...
Secretary was branched from Source a thousand years ago, and has no memories of ever being an Occupant. In their thousand year separation, Secretary became very different from Source. Secretary speaks of concepts like death that Source can only explain but never experience. Secretary tries to demonstrate understanding to Source by using their words (like "their is a comfort in a new camouflage") but Source hates being reminded of the way they used to speak. Their reunion is an awkward one.
Source expects Secretary to willingly merge back together, and so their betrayal comes as a surprise. Secretary's time on Earth has taught them that they can't hold onto everything, that some things must be allowed to die for the future to change. Source is overwritten without understanding or accepting this mindset, crying over their loss of Iris as they disappear.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Secretary's text color is #A8B7FF
- The devs intended for Secretary to have a deeper voice post-timeskip, so Micah Chen recorded their lines in Chapters 1-5 as a child, then recorded Chapters 6-10 a few years later, as a pre-teen.[2]
