Source
⚠️ CAUTION! major spoilers ahead! ⚠️
Source is the Occupant who made contact with Iris on the night of the dance, 2047 CE. They learned to communicate through communions with Iris, and later gifted her with Familiars as a way to continue their communions and provide fresh memories. A thousand years later, they were the last remaining Occupant on Earth.
Having branched themself to create Familiars, this Occupant is referred the "Source" from which Secretary originated.
Personality[edit | edit source]
In their brief time on-screen, Source reveals themself to be possessive and obsessive. When they meet Iris, they identify her as having a "gift", and subsequently kept her to themself, not allowing any other Occupants access to her and her memories. Despite having absorbed an unknown amount of memories from myriad other humans beforehand, once they discover Iris, Source seems to singularly focus on her alone, "choosing" her to remain alive on Earth so that she may continue to give them her memories, and calls her "my Iris". When every other Occupant leaves the Earth, Source elects to stay on the planet alone for the sole purpose of continuing to probe Iris for more memories, despite the seemingly diminishing returns.
Source also appears to be quite dismissive. They look down upon the human method of communication, and refer to the state they're in while merging with Secretary as "reducing ourselves". Additionally, every time Secretary brings up the death toll of the Occupants' presence on Earth, they brush him off. Their dismissal is rooted in their belief that their own experience being brought up in "true stasis" in the vacuum of space was a far greater hardship than the "world of plenty" Secretary was born in, and interpret Secretary's horror at the Occupants' causing planet-wide mass death as Secretary simply not understanding that "the transfer was lossless." They dismiss Secretary's individuality entirely, maintaining the belief that he is merely a shard of them and always has been.
History[edit | edit source]
Source was created (or "branched") at an unknown point in time within deep space. They describe their own Source as ungenerous; the only memory their Source gave to them, and as a result the only memory they had for "revolutions and revolutions", was of the deteriorating binary star system presumed to be the Occupant's home-system. Eventually, they, along with the other Occupants, drifted towards Earth where they discovered the complex and vibrant life inhabiting this planet.
On the night of the school dance in 2047 CE, Source was drawn to the intense emotions being felt by Jiao, who was running from Iris. Source was drawn to Iris' unique talent for provoking intense emotions (particularly negative ones), and "chose" Iris to remain, as a vector for causing a "heightened state of awareness". This granted Iris immortality and immunity to the Occupant's Disease. Source was able to learn how to communicate with humans by exploring Iris' memories, then repeating them in a re-contextualized manner to her.
Source passively observed Iris for at least thirty years before making an offer to her – she can have access to their power, in exchange for [CONFIRM QUOTE]. Then, Source branched themself to create three new Familiars, and enacted Iris's plea to kill the remaining inhabitants of the Pacific 50.
After Iris' covenant with Source, she spent the next year burying all the 50 that she could find.
- cloned herself
- came to know the occupants as how source refers to them – "the keepers"
Her responsibility was to regularly commune with them. When Iris was late to a communion due to her sleepwalking, the Keepers punished her by attacking the Ancient Sisters.

In 7AA, Secretary and Blue initiate a mass communion with the other two Familiars. In the mass communion, Source gets to meet Secretary again, and proposes that Secretary reintegrate with them.
SOURCE: You will be just me. You always were.
However, the Source was tricked by Secretary, who overwrote Source's "data" by recursively flooding it with the moment Watcher killed Iris.
In their last moments, Source clung to the memory of Iris before they were deleted. This essentially resulted in Source's death.
Relationships[edit | edit source]
Iris[edit | edit source]
Source is fascinated by Iris, seeing her as an excellent source of fresh emotions and memories, describing her ability to invoke strong negative emotions in others as "a gift". Source was possessive of her, relaying to Secretary in Ch. X that they "always kept her close - and to [themself]," not allowing the other Keepers access to her and her "gift". Even after the other Keepers had left Earth, Source remained to observe Iris and commune with her.
Secretary[edit | edit source]
- sees secretary as a limited part of themself- believes their will overrides secretary's
- thinks secretary should be "grateful" for being born in a world of "plenty" as opposed to their own upbringing starved of memory and connection in the void of space
