The Orchard

The Orchard is a location in 1000xRESIST. In the past, The Orchard was known as The Guarden, and was part of The 50's testing facility. In the present day, the Iris-type clones founded their society there.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The area labeled "Scary" in the in-game map is where Iris buried corpses of The 50.[2]
  • The Orchard's perplexingly winding layout was intended to be challenging to navigate and require players to learn the layout over time, simulating the developers' "experiences walking through places like Hong Kong and Tokyo, where you find yourself getting lost, but over time, something happens that you can find your way".[3]
  • Design-wise, The Orchard's inspiration is based on public metro infrastructure, internally dubbed "transit-core" by the developers[4]. Examples include:
    • Balamb Garden from FF8
    • The Uemda Sky Building[3] and Station
    • Kyoto Station
    • Hong Kong MTR[4]
    • The Promenade (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)[5]

  • Lucid: I did want to ask a little about the design of the orchard. I like all the hidden spots tucked away in different places, but I got lost in there so frequently! Remy Siu: We had always intended it to reflect thematically the kind of experience people may be having through-out the game, a kind of twisty-windy structure, that over time you may come to know better. Something that people would have to map out in their heads. We tried to avoid maps for this reason, or at least mini-maps or real-time maps that showed your position, as it may often stop that kind of mental mapping. (My experience of Limsa Lominsa in FF14, when I use the overlay map) That being said, I think what we're considering is having a static map, so people can reference the overall structure. A bit like when we didn't have google maps and we had to look at paper maps hahaha.

  • Remy Siu: Another thing we were thinking of, was our experiences walking through places like Hong Kong and Tokyo, where you find yourself getting lost, but over time, something happens that you can find your way. Obviously a hard thing to pull off hahaha That being said, the circular nature was inspired by Balamb Garden from FF8! Admittedly a much easier circle to navigate!
