The Shells
The shells are the Iris-type clone populace in the Orchard's society who are not Shapen Sisters.
During the ALLMOTHER era, shells are assigned a color and a function when they are born, and work under the Shapen Sister who leads that function. When a Shapen Sister vacates her position, Principal can elect a shell to graduate and become a new Shapen Sister. Shells do not have names; they are only known by their colors and characteristics. Some, if not all, shells live in Old Town.
During the Provisional Government's era, shells go by their number (the order they were printed in) until they choose a name they like. Shells can now also choose their own color instead of being assigned one, and are free to change between the 5 existing colors – Red (Red Guard), Orange (Defense), Pink (Health), Purple (Education), or Green (Infrastructure).
Shells who do not choose, or are unable to qualify as any color, are disgraced as a Miscellaneous-type. Miscellaneous-types are segregated in Old Town, and are barred from going "up" into the Orchard, unless they have biometric permissions. The only known Miscellaneous with such permissions was Bartender, who also worked the bar in the Orchard.
It is assumed that non-Miscellaneous shells live upstairs, possibly in the Orchard itself, though they can go "downstairs" to visit Old Town if they wish, as various colored shells can be seen in Old Town during Chapter 6.
After Watcher murdered the ALLMOTHER, the Provisional Government abolishes Watcher-types, so no more Watcher-type shells exist. It is unknown what happened to most of the Watcher-types, but it is assumed that some just changed their type. Of the old Watcher-type shells, Observant Shell becomes a member of the Red Guard, while Understudy Shell becomes the Minister of Culture.
