Timeline

Though events in 1000xRESIST are told in a non-linear fashion, this is an attempt at laying out relevant historical and in-game events in a chronological manner

The Past

1800s

• [1842] End of the First Opium War: To end the war with the UK, Qing dynasty China was forced to sign the Treaty of Nanjing. The unequal peace treaty had many demands, one of which included the island of Hong Kong, which was to become a British colony.

• [1860] End of the Second Opium War: As part of Convention of Peking (Beijing) – the unequal treaty that Qing dynasty China had signed to end the war – China was forced to cede the Kowloon Peninsula area to the UK.

• [1898] Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory: The UK forced Qing dynasty China to sign an unequal treaty to lease over the New Territories and northern Kowloon for 99 years.

1900s

• [1941] Battle of Hong Kong: During World War 2, Japan invaded the British-occupied Hong Kong. After a defeat, the British colonial governor of Hong Kong surrendered control of the colony to Japan. Japanese martial law led to escalations in state violence.

• [1945] After Japan surrendered in World War 2, the Japanese occupation handed control of Hong Kong over to the British once again.

• [1950s] Thousands of refugees from mainland China, during the communist revolution in China

• [1960s] Hong Kong became a manufacturing and textiles powerhouse

• 1967 Hong Kong riots: Labour strikes in Hong Kong grew into anti-colonial, anti-government protests against the British colonial rule. Many protestors held leftist views, and their large-scale demonstrations were violently suppressed by the Hong Kong Police Force (HKPF)

• [1980s] One country, two systems proposal

• 1997 Hong Kong is handed over to China, and becomes a SAR (Special Administrative Region)

2000s

• 2014 Umbrella Revolution

• 2019 Hong Kong protests: Mother and Father meet during a protest, where Father got beaten up by police officers. Father asks Mother to give him her phone number. Mother instead gives him her dad's phone number.

• 2020: Mother and Father witness a fellow protestor killed by falling to her death

• 2021: Mother and Father are at an airport, preparing to leave to go to Canada. Grandmother chides Mother for leaving

Iris' Beginnings

• 2028/2029: August 14, Iris is born

• 2036: The Kwan family move to a new apartment

• 2037: Iris microwaves Bobo

• 2038: Father tells Iris to keep Mother's sleepwalking a "secret secret"

• 2043: Iris becomes a vegetarian

• 2046: Jiao comes over for Iris' birthday party

2040s

• 2047:
  • Before the school dance
  • Night of the school dance
  • Iris meets the occupant while running after Jiao
  • Since around this time, Iris doesn't physically age because Occupants are impeding it, trying to preserve her and her only
  • Jiao passes away from the disease

Trivia

• 2047 marks the end of Hong Kong's 50-year "One Country, Two Systems" semi-autonomous status, after which it would be integrated into China.

• In the early stages of 1000xRESIST's writing, a mural board was used to roughly conceptualize its chronology, with "the earliest [chronological] thing that didn't appear in the game" as the World War 2 occupation of Hong Kong.
